ALEX MELAMID
Pencil drawing on paper.  16x20in.

Alex Melamid

Alexander Melamid recently completed a series of portraits of today’s hip hop icons painted in 17th century traditional realistic style.  In doing so he is cementing modern iconography within the timeline of art history.  By bringing the worlds of Velazquez together with contemporary man, Melamid aims to elevate modernity to new levels, thus breaking down the boundaries between high Art and pop culture. This recent shift from conceptualism back to realism marks the return to artistic fundamentalism for Melamid.

This sketch of hip hop mogul, 50 Cent, represents the defining vision for Melamid’s newly created masterpiece.

PRICE: $800

An ancient peaceful soul, entrenched deep into the earth’s core of Central Java, rises up through the misty volcanic terrain touching the elements of centuries past and present, leaving a tangible softness in its mystical wake.  It is here, in the depths of the rural verdant countryside that Amanjiwo resides, facing the world’s largest Buddhist sanctuary, the 8th century Borobudur and the mystical hill, Tidar, believed to house the spirit and geographical centre of Java. Four whispering volcanoes rise dramatically in the distance surveying the resplendent circular limestone monolith, the tranquil heart of Amanjiwo, while the gentle Menoreh Hills rise directly.
